Written by Edward Lear. Illustrated by Kevin W. Maddison. 1978 first edition. A Studio Book. The Viking Press, New York.

"The Pobble who has no toes
Had once as many as we;
When they said, 'Some day you may lose them all;'-
He replied, -'Fish fiddle de-dee!'

"And his Aunt Jobiska made him drink,
Lavender water tinged with pink,
For she said, 'The World in general knows
There's nothing so good for a Pobble's toes!'

FRONT FLAP

"Edward Lear was born in 1812, the twenty-first child of a London stockbroker. His earliest drawings where ornithological and attracted the attention of the thirteenth Earl of Derby, who invited Lear to draw the famous menagerie at Knowsley Hall. During his stay there, Lear composed the first Book of Nonsense for the amusement of the Earl's children. In 1837, he left for Italy, and he spent the rest of his life touring various parts of the world, painting Mediterranean scenes, writing and illustrating travel journals, and creating limericks and humorous verse.

"Lear's Laughable Lyrics, a collection of delectable whimsy, was first published in 1877, and included a typically bizarre poem, "The Pobble who has no toes". It tells of the marine adventures of an imaginary creature, the Pobble, who takes every precaution against danger but nonetheless emerges toeless from the sea. Despite this misfortune, the tale has a cheerful ending. ..."

Artist and illustrator Kevin W. Maddison (1946 - ) lives in Lincolnshire, England, and illustrated three Edward Lear poems as books, among many books for children. The first, "The Pobble who has no toes", was included in the National Book League's annual Fifty Best Books awards, and Maddison's watercolors were included in a traveling exhibit of British illustration.
