Josefina Javelina by Susan Lowell, first edition.

Written by Susan Lowell. Illustrated by Bruce MacPherson. First edition, 2005. Rising Moon publishers.

"Once upon a time, way out in the desert, there were three little javelinas, and their names were Juan, Jose, and Josefina (Ho-seh-FEE-na).

"Javelinas (Ha-ve-LEE-nas) are hairy, hoggy critters, wild and free. They love to eat cactus - thorns and all.

"From dusk to dawn, Juan and Jose' gobbled and crunched.

"S-s-sweet!" they slurped.

"Snur-r-rp!" they burped.

"Then they scratched each other's backs and snoozed all day.

"But their sister was different.

"Josefina was a dreamer. With her head in the clouds and stars in her eyes, she sang and danced wherever she went."

Josefina aspires to dance, to be a ballerina, would dearly love to perform at the Oasis Snack Bar and Cantina, but no one recognizes her talent. One day, she gets a postcard from her cousin Angelina, who invites her to come for a visit. She lives in Hollywood! This could be Josefina's big chance. She leaves for LA and the next step is to find a talent agency. Josefina and Angelina meet with a promising agent, White E. Lamb, who raves over Josefina's beauty and talent. But she's suspicious. He reminds her of someone. Turns out, he's a coyote in sheep's clothing! Run! They run from the coyote and Josefina runs right into stardom.

Tucson writer and journalist Susan Lowell, a fourth generation Arizonan, has written numerous well-known children's books, including The Bootmaker and the Elves, The Tortoise and the Jackrabbit, The Three little Javelinas, and Cindy Ellen. Two Desperados, a short story collection, received the George Garrett Fiction Prize, and Ganado Red, tracing the history of a Navajo rug, is also a great read.
