Colorful 1946 edition of Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm illustrated by Harriet.

Adapted and illustrated by Harriet. 1946 edition, Maxton Books for Little People. Designed and produced by Spring House, Springfield MA. Maxton Publishers, Inc., New York, publishers.

"Once upon a time, long before you and I were born, there lived two little children whose names were Hansel and Gretel. They loved their father dearly, but their stepmother was a wicked old woman who plotted daily to get rid of them.

"Don't cry, Little Gretel," Hansel comforted, "I'll think of something."

In this colorfully illustrated version of the Grimm Brothers' tale, Hansel and Gretel's terrible stepmother leads them into the forest to collect kindling for the fire, and leaves them there. But when Hansel looks for the breadcrumb trail he cleverly left - "I'll think of something" - they find it's been eaten by birds. They wander the forest looking for a way home, and instead find a fantastic cottage made of gingerbread and candy, and are met by a kind-seeming old woman. She invites them in for a meal but it's a trick. She's really a witch who lures children into her cottage and fattens them up for her own meals. The witch locks Hansel into a shed and feeds him fattening things and nearly starves Gretel. When it's time to prepare Hansel, Gretel shoves her into the oven and rescues her brother. They search the cottage and find a treasure! And they return home to their father and live happily ever after.
