"I wonder, Lady Bug," said Jane Elizabeth's father to Jane Elizabeth, "now that Buddy Jim has come to live with us, if it would, not be a good plan to go to the country to live this summer?"
"What is the Country, Daddy?" inquired Elizabeth Jane.
"It is a big place, all out-of-doors, like the park, only bigger," said Daddy, "and there are birds and bees and butterflies and moths and bugs, besides Grass-hoppers and Katydids and many other things; all wild and free with no cages for anything to live in.
"And there are wild flowers, and you could have a garden of your own. Shall we go, Lady Bug?" he asked.
"Oh, Daddy, let's!" said Jane Elizabeth.
"And that's how these stories became!"
Jane Elizabeth discovers a surprise: The creatures talk back! New friends include the Prince Tiger Swallow Tail, Hummingbird Moth, Trap-Door Spider, Cicada's Visit, Little Mrs. Hop Toad, and thirteen other animals and insects she meets in the country. The charming artwork is delightful.
Elizabeth Gordon (1866 - 1922) was a children's book author and poet.
Janet Laura Scott (1888-1968) was an accomplished illustrator and water colorist, and worked primarily for the P F Volland publishing company.
