Written and illustrated by Etienne Delessert. Designed by Rita Marshall. First edition, 2016. Creative Editions, an imprint of The Creative Company.
"A beach tree of a thousand years graced the garden.
Perched among the copper leaves was a lonely bear.
The bear sported a fuzzy, furry hat,
freckled with ribbons and bells."
The bells attract animals that take up residence in the furry hat. The more music, the more animals. A stork, a swan, an owl, a duck, two parrots. Flying fish and butterflies. A giraffe, an elephant, a rhino, a pig, some cats, a snail, and ladybugs. The type of silly story - with lots of animals - that children love.
And that inspires imagination and questions.
Swiss artist Etienne Delessert's (1941 - ) based this story on Edward Lear's silly rhyming poem, "The Quangle Wangle’s Hat". Delessert has collaborated with playwright Eugene Ionesco and child psychologist Jean Piaget to use storytelling methods to expand children's minds and creativity. He is a two-time finalist for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for lifetime contributions to illustration in children's literature.
