The German folk tale on which Grimms' Fairy Tale #53, Schneewittchen, is based, tells of a beautiful princess whose *biological* mother envies her own unrivaled beauty and tries to lose her in the forest. The brothers Grimm, like Disney a hundred and fifty years later, edited the story to give Snow White an evil *stepmother* to soften the story for young readers. But the original story, like Disney's, also had a happy ending.
