"Miles, Ezra, and Timothy Bellamy needed no clock to tell them when it was time to bring the cows home. It would have done them no good to wish for one, either, for Father was stubborn about having a clock in the house. He was jealous for the big silver watch which his own father had bought in Boston town sixty years before."

Mabel Leigh Hunt (1892 - 1971) wrote well-regarded children's books, including two Newbery Medal runners-up. Her Indiana-born Quaker background informed these and other stories, including The Peddler's Clock. In a time when a Father is "lord and master of his household", he overrules his wife's wish for a pretty shelf clock by purchasing yet another milk cow. But, one day, while farmer Bellamy is away, a peddler comes by and shows Mrs. Bellamy the "clock of her dreams", and she trades him their newest cow Muley for it. Her son is heartsick over the loss of his favorite cow, and his Father is very angry. But Father reflects on coveting his silver watch and relents on the clock and buys back Muley.

Elizabeth Orton Jones (1920 - 2005) was a Caldecott Medal-winning children's book illustrator. In 1932, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, after which she received a diploma from the École des Beaux Arts.
