There are 42 volumes, published from 1959 - 1961, in this wonderful and highly collectible book series. All contain classic children's stories, fairy and folk tales, and topics pertaining to history, biography, and science. All are beautifully illustrated.
Volume 27 is a fun collection that begins with the classic adventure story Robinson Crusoe and continues with nine stories, including a Norse folk tale, a biography of Red Cross founder Clara Barton, and a how-to on card games. Doubleday employed outstanding illustrators, and volume 27 includes artwork by Andy Warhol, Lawrence Beall Smith, Edward Shenton, and Vladimir Bobri.
