"Mit verstandlicher Apannung sahen die Auswanderer ihrer ersten Begegnung mit den Menschen ihrer neuen Heimat entgegen. Und diese Begegnung erfolgte schon bald, nachdem sie in ihren Planwagen die Grenze uberschritten hatten. Sie fuhren in das erste russiche Dorf ein. Und gleich heir begann ihr Staunen und ihr Verwundern, denn ihnen tat sich eine ganz neue Welt auf. Die niedrigen, strohgedeckten Lehmkaten mit den kleinen oft blinden Fensterscheiben, die aus Weidenruten geflochtenen Strassenzaune, die knarrenden Ziehbrunnen, die Manner mit Haaren bis ins Genick und die Frauen in bauschigen Rocken und bunten Kopftuchern - das alles war fur sie fremd und so ganz anders als sie sich dieses Land vorgestellt hatten."

"The emigrants looked forward to their first encounter with the people of their new home with understandable excitement. And this encounter happened soon after they crossed the border in their covered wagons. They drove into the first Russian village. And immediately their astonishment and wonder began, because a whole new world opened up for them. The low, thatched mud cottages with the small, often blind window panes, the street fence woven from willow branches, the creaking fountains, the men with hair down to their necks and the women in puffy skirts and colorful head scarves - all of this was strange to them and so very different from how they had imagined this country."
