Ginger & Pickles by Beatrix Potter - Peter Rabbit Book #15 - Vintage Child Book

Sorry, this item has sold.

Beatrix Potter's Ginger and Pickles are shopkeepers and find that they can't give customers unlimited credit and stay in business.

Written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. Circa 1960s (originally published in 1909). Frederick Warne & Co, New York and London.

"Once upon a time there was a village shop. The name over the window was "Ginger and Pickles"."

Ginger and Pickles own a shop popular with the local villagers, in large part due to the shopkeepers' practice of extending their customers unlimited credit. Ginger, a ginger cat, and Pickles, a terrier, exercise more discipline in controlling their impulse to eat some of their tastier customers, particularly the mice and bunnies, such as Sammy and Peter and his cousin Benjamin. Alas, their generosity puts them out of business, a void quickly filled by the price-gouging Tabitha Twitchit and the charming Sally Henny-Penny.

Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943) is the beloved creator of Peter Rabbit, his cousin Benjamin Bunny, the Flopsy Bunnies, and Mr. MacGregor, Squirrel Nutkin, The Tailor of Gloucester, Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten, Mr. Tod, Timmy Tiptoes, and many other dear characters. Ms Potter was an interesting and quite formidable character in her own right, and if she's new to you, I hope you'll learn more about her.

In the world of Beatrix Potter, it's often an effort to identify her books' publication dates. I'm unable to date this one, but here are a few clues:

- The original title, when published in 1909, was "Ginger and Pickles". Frederick Warne added "The Tale of" in 1931.
- A book's copyright date isn't synonymous with the publication date, but this book's copyright renewal date of 1937 helps narrow the timeframe.
- Absence of an SBN/ISBN number dates the book before 1967, when SBN numbers were first assigned.
- The ballpoint pen with red ink used to write the inscription suggests 1960s.

If you're a better detective, I hope you'll share what you know!
