Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington - First Edition Children's Books - Vintage Book, Indiana, 1920s

Sorry, this item has sold.

1920s edition of Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington, a story of boyhood and growing up in Indiana. The sequel to Penrod, first published in 1916.

Written by Booth Tarkington. Circa 1929 (originally published in 1916). Grosset & Dunlap.

Front flap:

"At the magic age of twelve, Penrod continues to learn something of the ways of love - particularly as they related to the heart of Marjorie Jones. With the aid of his friends, Sam Williams and Herman, Penrod captures a remarkable cat - "part panther or something."... There is a severe outbreak of cavalry in the neighborhood - an outbreak which rivals the great war. Penrod attends a party and feels himself unjustly blamed for the fact that said party failed to be a social success; and many another amusing or tragic adventure is recounted."

Booth Tarkington (1869 - 1946) was regarded in his time as America's greatest living author, one of three authors to ever win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature more than once, for The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams.

Tarkington's Penrod (1914) and its sequels - Penrod and Sam (1916), Penrod and Jashber (1929) - were top-selling children's books, rivaling Mark Twain. But times changed and left Tarkington behind. (Lasso Books published a revised edition of Penrod in 1917, eliminating references that are outdated or offensive to modern readers.)

PLEASE NOTE: This is a Grosset & Dunlap reprint, circa 1929, not a first edition, based on the cover art, dated 1929, the gift inscription dated 1930, the promotional booklist on the back of the jacket, and a reference to Novels of Distinction, a book series launched in 1926.

Like a lot of people, I read this book and "Penrod" a very long time ago. I look forward to reading it again, even if I did buy it hurriedly, anticipating the weight of the "PC" world falling on these books because of current events (Penrod was written before WWI, so you can imagine the kind of language that is used!)
