1918 edition of The American Bible edited by Alice Hubbard.

Edited by Alice Hubbard. 1918 edition. The Roycrofters, East Aurora, New York.

Elbert Green Hubbard (1856 – 1915) was an important force in the American Arts and Crafts Movement, inspired by the work of William Morris, and in 1895 founded The Roycrofters, an artists' community in East Aurora, NY.

The Roycrofters creed:

"A belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness."

The Roycroft community included printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders. The Roycroft campus is now a National Historic Landmark.

Hubbard's wife Alice (1861 - 1915) was an influential feminist and general manager of The Roycrofters collective.

The Hubbards died in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.

AN AMERICAN BIBLE
INTRODUCTION

"American people who live on the fortieth parallel, in the Twentieth Century, need a book - many books - of truth, for truth is relative, not fixed or static. This book, which we call An American Bible, is for people on this continent.

"This American Bible is fitted to the needs of men and women now on earth, and the hope is that it will help them to live - we can die without assistance. Any one my accept or reject it, may add to it or subtract from it. As the years go by, there will be constructed other bibles and better bibles."

- Alice Hubbard

Hubbard selected the writings of three of America's founders, two presidents, authors, and poets.

Condition*: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Brown leather with gold-embossed decoration on the cover and spine: Some rubbing front and back; small chip at head of the spine; corners slightly bumped. Inside: Small brown-ish thumbprint-like stain in the bottom right corner of the Contents page; evidence of moisture, likely water, on the Title page thru page 18, and on a corner of page 109. The frontispiece portrait of Hubbard was printed on a full-page leaf that was bound into the book with the right half between pages 12 and 13. This page was neatly cut from the book. So far, research hasn't revealed whether it was blank or printed, or removed by the bookbinder or a previous owner. But all the typeset pages are complete.
