This 1905 first edition marks the fifth book by Harry Leon Wilson (1867 - 1939), a prominent pillar of the legendary Bohemian literary community of Carmel, California, alongside Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Ambrose Bierce, Alice MacGowan, and Sinclair Lewis. Crucially, the book was illustrated by Wilson’s second wife, Rose Cecil O'Neill (1874 - 1944). O'Neill was a trailblazing illustrator, cartoonist, and fine artist who would soon achieve international fame and fortune as the creator of the "Kewpie"—the most culturally dominant cartoon character of the early 20th century next to Mickey Mouse. Her distinctive, expressive character illustrations bring Wilson’s satirical small-town narrative to life.

Condition*: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Green cloth cover boards with embossed white and beige cover design: White soiling on the back; slightly bumped at the corners; light edgewear; back has bend in upper corner. Inside: Small brown spot and chip on front flyleaf; tissue protecting the frontispiece is missing; deckle edge pages are lightly tanned. I've left the powdery white soiling on the back as-is so that it can be professionally cleaned.
