The Note Book of Elbert Hubbard: Mottos, Epigrams, Short Essays, Passages, Orphic Sayings and Preachments.

Written by Elbert Hubbard. 1927, first edition. Printed by The Roycrofters, East Aurora. William Wise & Co., Roycroft Distributors, New York City.

"Genius is only the power of making continuous efforts. The line between failure and success is so fine that we scarcely know when we pass it: so fine that we are often on the line and do not know it. How many a man has thrown up his hands at a time when a little more effort, a little more patience, would have achieved success. As the tide goes clear out, so it comes clear in..."

Elbert Green Hubbard (1856 – 1915) was an important force in the American Arts and Crafts Movement, inspired by the work of William Morris, and in 1895 he founded the Roycroft artists' community in East Aurora, NY.

The Roycrofters creed:

"A belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness."

The Roycroft community included printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders. The Roycroft campus is now a National Historic Landmark.

The Note Book of Elbert Hubbard, collected posthumously by his second wife, is an excellent example of the Roycroft printmakers' craft, utilizing handmade papers and block printing.
