In 1866, John Erskine Clarke (1827–1920), a British clergyman, founded Chatterbox as a wholesome alternative to the often violent and crass "penny dreadfuls" popular with boys, especially working class boys. Chatterbox was chock-full of stories to inspire, entertain, and educate, poetry, illustrations, cartoons, and odds and ends. While Chatterbox enjoyed a long run, from 1866 - 1948, it never displaced the delicious penny dreadfuls, to this day.
