Westward Ho!
or, the Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight of Burrough, in the County of Devon, In the reign of Her Most Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

Front flap:

"The book, in this edition so ably and dramatically illustrated by N. C. Wyeth, weaves its romantic story around names that are familiar to us - the islands and cities of our "American Mediterranean," the Caribbean Sea. The palm trees, coral reefs and dancing fireflies of the Barbados, the jungles and fabled cities of the Orinoco, Cartagena with the gold galleons, all appear in its pages. Romance, "the golden tropic sea, the golden Spanish Main" and for good measure the battle with the Spanish Armada - everything is here to please those who enjoy a good adventure story."

Charles Kingsley (1819 - 1875) was a priest of the Church of England, a university professor, a social reformer, and a novelist. His skill at description was on display in his best-known historical novels - Westward Ho!, Hypatia, and Two Years Ago - as well as children's books - The Water-Babies, The Heroes, and Madam How and Lady Why.

Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945) was the first of three generations of influential artists, most notably as the father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth. As an illustrator, N. C. Wyeth, who studied under Howard Pyle, the father of American illustration, is best known for illustrating the Scribner Classics, including Westward Ho!. As a painter of over 3,000 works, among his best known are the murals depicting the Pilgrims at Plymouth commissioned by Metropolitan Life Insurance.
