Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book: Containing the inspired and inspiring selections, gathered during a life time of discriminating reading for his own use.

Written by Elbert Hubbard. 1923, first edition. Printed and made into a book by The Roycrofters, at their shops, in East Aurora, Erie County, New York State. William Wise & Co., Roycroft Distributors, New York City.

"The place to take the true measure of a man is not in the darkest place or in the amen corner, nor the cornfield, but by his own fireside. There he lays aside his mask and you may learn whether he is an imp or an angel, cur or king, hero or humbug. I care not what the world says of him: whether it crowns him boss or pelts him with bad eggs. I care not a copper what his reputation or religious may be: if his babies dread his homecoming and his better half swallows her heart every time she has to ask him for a five-dollar bill, he is a fraud of the first water, even though he prays night and morning until he is black in the face and howls hallelujah until he shakes the eternal hills. But if his children rush to the front door to meet him and love's sunshine illuminates the face of his wife every time she hears his footfall, you can take it for granted that he is pure, for his home is a heaven..."

Elbert Green Hubbard (1856 – 1915) was an important force in the American Arts and Crafts Movement, inspired by the work of William Morris, and in 1895 he founded the Roycroft artists' community in East Aurora, NY.

The Roycrofters creed:

"A belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness."

The Roycroft community included printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders. The Roycroft campus is now a National Historic Landmark.

Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book, collected after his death, is an excellent example of the Roycroft printmakers' craft, utilizing handmade papers and block printing.
