Lovely first edition of Wynken, Blynken, & Nod, a poem by Eugene Field, illustrated by Johanna Westerman.
Written by Eugene Field. Illustrated by Johanna Westerman. First edition, first printing, 1995. North-South Books.
Poet Eugene Field (1850 - 1895) was known as "the poet of childhood". I loved the story of Wynken, Blynken & Nod as a child, and this book has become my favorite illustrated version. Among his more well-known poems are The Fly-Away Horse, Little Boy Blue, Seein' Things, and The Sugar-Plum Tree.
"Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night sailed off in a wooden shoe -
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
Said Wynken,
Blynken,
and Nod."
Westerman's artwork recites the poem gently and beautifully. Kirkus Reviews wrote in their review of Mother Holly, another Westerman illustrated book, that she "...wields color like a magic wand". Her other books include Mother Mab and the Bogey Beast, The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, and Little Swan.
