Sorry, this item has sold.

First edition of Paddington's Pop-Up Book by Michael Bond. A stowaway bear is rescued from Paddington Station and finds a home.

Written by Michael Bond. Pictures by Ivor Wood. First published in 1977. William Collins Sons & Co. Ltd, London.

As the story goes, "One Christmas Eve, Michael Bond came across a toy bear on the shelf of a London store. Unable to resist it, he bought it as a stocking filler for his wife and, because they lived in Paddington at the time, that became the bear's name." Bond wrote A Bear Called Paddington in 1958, and after delighting nearly three generations of children with tales of Paddington Bear, he passed away in London in 2017.

PADDINGTON'S POP-UP BOOK

"Mr. and Mrs. Brown first met Paddington on a railway platform. In fact, that was how he came to have such an unusual name for a bear, because Paddington was the name of the station.

"They were waiting to meet their daughter Judy, who was coming home for the school holidays, when Mr. Brown caught sight of him, sitting on an old suitcase behind a pile of luggage near the Lost Property Office."

"As they drew near, the bear stood up and politely raised his hat. "Good-afternoon," he said, "Can I help you?"

As the bear's story goes, he'd stowed away in the life-boat of a ship from "darkest Peru", surviving only on marmalade. The Browns were charmed and Mrs. Brown named him Paddington. Their new bear proved quite a handful, illustrated by the delightful pop-ups that show him taking a bubble bath, buying pajamas at Barkridges, taking his first escalator ride, and tucking into his own bed to live happily ever after.
