1927 fourth printing of Doctor Dolittle's Garden, written and illustrated by Hugh Lofting.
Written and illustrated by Hugh Lofting. First edition, fourth printing, 1927. F. A. Stokes & Co., New York.
Hugh Lofting (1886 - 1974) was an English author and the creator of Doctor Dolittle, which began as a series of stories set in Victorian England that he wrote to his children from the trenches of WW I to spare them the reality of their father's day-to-day experience. Doctor Dolittle's Garden was the 7th Dolittle book, following Doctor Dolittle's Caravan and Doctor Dolittle's Zoo.
This volume is the worse for wear - a reading copy or placeholder - read and loved by children over the past one hundred years. The stories are completed by Lofting's charming line drawing and full-color illustrations of the many characters, humans, and animals.

Throughout the previous Autumn and part of the Winter I had assisted him in the collection of caterpillars and chrysalis and we had a fine stock in the hatching houses. The care of these required considerable knowledge and experience - of which I had not a great deal, though I was always learning. They had to be kept at the right temperature and moisture and each caterpillar had to be fed on a special kind of leaf till he had spun his web and retired into his chrysalis shell. But the Doctor who had studied butterflies ever since he was a boy of nine had a positively prodigious knowledge of the subject. ..."
