Little Bear was Harper & Row's first I Can Read title, originally published in 1957. This edition was published twenty years later, based on the reviews in the book and the gift inscription.
Else Holmelund Minarik (1920 - 2012) authored over 30 children's books but is best known for the Little Bear series, which was adapted for television.
Maurice Sendak (1928 - 2012) is, so far, the only American to be awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for contributions to children's literature. Sendak illustrated the entire Little Bear series, Where The Wild Things Are, In The Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and many other children's books.
