Jump Again! More Adventures of Brer Rabbit by Joel Chandler Harris, adapted by Van Dyke Parks, and illustrated by Barry Moser.
Written by Joel Chandler Harris. Adapted by Van Dyke Parks. Illustrated by Barry Moser. First edition, second printing, 1987. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers.
CHAPTER I - BRER RABBIT, HE'S A GOOD FISHERMAN
"Way back yonder - it might have been in the year One for all we know - Brer Rabbit could cut more capers than a hive has bumbly-bees.
"Under his hat, Brer Rabbit had a mighty quick thinking apparatus, and all the time, the pranks he played on the other folks pestered them both ways - a-coming and a-going."
In 1984, composer and Mississippi native Van Dyke Parks set five Uncle Remus stories to music and produced Jump!, a "brilliant" album accompanied by an award-winning children's book illustrated by the incomparable Barry Moser. Their follow-up, Jump Again!: More Adventures of Brer Rabbit, is another treasure and winner of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year and Redbook's Children's Picture Book Award.
Joel Chandler Harris (1848 - 1908) was a journalist, with 24 years spent at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and a folklorist, and author of Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings. Harris is a controversial figure; through his acquaintance with slaves on the Turnwold Plantation, where he worked as a printer's apprentice, he recognized the value of their folktales, transcribed them into vernacular, and eventually published them, for which he's been accused of cultural appropriation, yet he also advocated for reconciliation between blacks and whites following the Civil War, publicly condemned the racism of his era and the depredations of Reconstruction, and advocated for the education of black people.
In collecting the Uncle Remus stories, Harris believed he was helping to preserve an important part of African-American culture that would otherwise have been lost, including their language, or vernacular. I've visited the Wren's Nest, Harris's home in Atlanta, a National Historic Landmark and a museum since 1913. A wonderful group of professional storetellers mesmerize audiences with the history of the Uncle Remus stories - where in Africa a story may have originated, how it may have changed over time, what it meant - and tell them in the original vernacular and modern dialect. It's a one-of-a-kind experience.
Among the variety of adaptations of Uncle Remus for modern readers, Jump! and Jump Again! are done with great affection and respect for the original stories.
