Beautiful first edition of The Enchanted World by Amabel Williams-Ellis, illustrated by Moira Kemp.
Written by Amabel Williams-Ellis. Illustrated by Moira Kemp. First published in Great Britain in 1987. Hodder and Stoughton, London.
Front flap:
"This collection of favourite and less well-known stories from around the world was chosen by Lady Amabel Williams-Ellis during the last year of her life. A storyteller of international repute, Amabel Williams-Ellis aimed to offer her readers the greatest variety of stories from those she had collected in the many different countries she visited. Her principal aim was to help children to understand better the culture and traditions of countries other than their own."
Lady Amabel did indeed assemble a lovely book of folklore and fairy tales, and Moira Kemp, illustrator of more than 30 children's books, provided beautiful black and white line drawings and full-color paintings.
There are 22 stories, and one of my favorites is The Great White Cat.
"Once upon a time, far away in the north of Norway, there was a hunter and he caught a big white bear, alive, in a trap. It was such a fine young bear that he hadn't the heart to kill it, so he thought he would take it to the Kind of Denmark for a present. So he tamed it, and a very good bear it was."
The hunter and the bear begin their journey to the King's at Christmastime, and when they reach the Dovrafell, the normally hospitable Halvor and his wife are reluctant to have them stay the night, as they'd battled a pack of naughty trolls every Christmas for the last seven years. The hunter and the bear weren't afraid of trolls! Sure enough, the trolls arrive to torment Halvor and his family and their guests. But they mistake the bear for a big white cat, and the normally quiet bear, angry, lets out a terrible roar and scares them away, for good. Halvor and his wife are most grateful, and the hunter and the bear continue on to the King's.
