Forged in the blood, booze, and heavy cigarette ash of the classic 1930s and 1940s pulp landscape, The Eerie Mr. Murphy is an extraordinary time-machine trip back to the golden age of American weird fiction. Acting as the companion volume to Time Burial, this meticulously compiled anthology brings together Howard Wandrei’s rarest surviving speculative fiction. The text is split into two archival sections: Part One preserves his hard-to-find published fantasies unearthed from vintage magazines, while Part Two features his earliest youth stories and highly sought-after unpublished fiction.
As the legendary World Fantasy Award winner Tim Powers observed, this is raw, unadulterated pulp fiction poured from the same dark cauldron that birthed H.P. Lovecraft, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler. Published by the specialty house Fedogan & Bremer in 2003, this pristine copy features Wandrei's own striking black-and-white line illustrations. It is a cornerstone acquisition for collectors of classic Weird Tales lore, pulp historians, and completions of small-press speculative portfolios.
Howard Wandrei (1909 - 1956) was the brother of Donald Wandrei, the more well-known writer of the two at the time due to Howard's use of numerous pseudonyms. In fact he wrote over 200 stories across many genres. His mysteries were collected into The Last Pin (1996). Time Burial (1995) was a collection of fantasy stories. The Eerie Mr. Murphy is a companion to Time Burial, thus considered Volume II.
Mr. Murphy is divided into two sections:
Part 1: All known published fantasies not included in Time Burial.
Part 2: Juvenalia (earliest stories written in his youth) and unpublished fiction.
