My Michigan by Gwen Frostic of Benzonia, Michigan celebrates her home state in poetry and beautiful 1950s linoleum block prints.
Written and illustrated by Gwen Frostic. SIGNED. Copyright 1957, printed circa 1980s. Gwen Frostic Prints, Benzonia Michigan.
Gwen Frostic (1906 - 2001) was the founder and president of Presscraft Papers, which translated her hand-carved linoleum block prints into art prints, stationary, books, and other paper goods. In the 1950s, she opened a shop in Frankfort, Michigan, and in the 1960s moved to a 40-acre property in Benzonia, the landmark location where she lived and worked until her death. Frostic's Benzonia shop is still open and 12 of the original Heidelberg presses are still running, printing selections from the 2,300 blocks Gwen Frostic carved over her lifetime. She'll be remembered for years to come through her $13 million bequest to Western Michigan University, her alma mater, which honored her with the Gwen Frostic School of Art.
My Michigan is a beautiful, loving tribute to Frostic's home state; a pairing of her own poetry and the block prints capture the state's history, natural environment, and business and cultural development during the 1950s. Frostic borrows from Japanese wood cut tradition, and many of the prints are exceptionally lovely, some in their complexity, others in their simplicity.
