Moods In Gold, Silver, Precious Gems, and Cookies
"Gold, silver, and precious gems (a rainbow of colors) are beautiful words, thought provoking.
"The idea to do a book was very exciting - to capture a mood, a reflective or a caprice in metal and color; etching, enamels on gold, silver and copper, a media semi foreign to me would be great and fun.
"I began by doing a few sketches of things that I wanted to do in gold, silver and precious gems. The more I became involved the more fascinating the concept because, but the more and more I realized that I had to depend on goldsmiths and silversmiths to interpret and translate my many ideas and sketches.
"Because we are now in the era of exotic jewelry, an awareness, perhaps a renaissance, of ancient old world jewelry, a revival of traditional and modern indian turquoise. Jewelry and best of all Americans are now producing stylized jewelry. The great demand for jewelry has produced many young goldsmiths and silversmiths. Everybody is wearing some of jewelry. it's great, it's healthy and it's beautiful."
Ted DeGrazia (1909 - 1982) was an Italian-born artist who arrived in Tucson, Arizona in the 1940s and through his paintings, sculpture, and other media created iconic images of Arizona and the Southwest, and was best-known in his time for depictions of Native American and Mexican children. His art gallery, the Gallery of the Sun, continues to celebrate his life and art.
He worked with well-known Tucson goldsmiths, silversmiths, and other craftspeople in creating the jewelry featured in Moods, including Bernard Coyle (La Prenda), Barry Seidel and Michel Marzano (Double Eagle), and Alfredo (El Mercado Shop).
