Illustrated Junior Library edition of The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, illustrated by Lynd Ward.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Illustrated by Lynd Ward. 1946 edition. Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers.

Daniel Defoe (1659 - 1731) was, according to Wikipedia, "an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer, and spy", and as colorful a character as any he created in his best-known novels: Robinson Crusoe, A Journal of the Plague Year, Colonel Jack, Mol Flanders, and Roxana.

Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719 to great acclaim and popularity, marking it as among the very first English novels, though some consider it to be the first. Wikipedia: "Robinson Crusoe marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre."

CHAPTER I

"I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull. He got a good estate by merchandise, and leaving off his trade, lived afterward at York; from whence he had married my mother, whose relations were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but by the usual corruption of words in England we are now called, nay we call ourselves Crusoe; and so my companions always called me."

CHAPTER IX

"September 30, 1659. I, poor, miserable Robinson Crusoe, being shipwrecked, during a dreadful storm, in the offing, came on shore on this dismal, unfortunate island, which I called the Island of Despair, all the rest of the ship's company being drowned, and myself almost dead."

Artist Lynd Ward (1905 - 1985) was an influential 20th century illustrator, and he created for Robinson Crusoe a world as colorful and adventurous as the story. In addition to being a Caldecott Medal-winning children's book illustrator, Ward is best-known for use of wood engravings, or woodcuts, to create wordless novels, the precursor to graphic novels. These works include God's Man, Madman's Drum, Wild Pilgrimage, Prelude to a Million Years, Song Without Words, and Vertigo.
