First edition of The Untold Adventures of Santa Claus by Ogden Nash, as told by one of Santa's elves.
Written by Ogden Nash. Illustrated by Walter Lorraine. Stated first edition, 1964. Little, Brown & Co.
Poet Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971) was a singular crafter of word pictures whose easy-going way of taking himself lightly allowed him to take people, places, including his beloved New York City, and life in general less seriously. Yet he was taken quite seriously by fellow poets and millions of readers as a genius with language who could both entertain and provoke with clever, whimsical rhyming and wordplay and insightful observation.
I promise, after reading Nash's Untold Adventures of Santa Claus, you'll have a whole new appreciation for St. Nick.
"People think they know all about Santa Claus,
But I happen to know they don't,
Because -
Well, because of a story that reached my ear
Which sheds new light on the saint's career.
People think his journeys sail along
As smooth and sweet as a Christmas song,
With nothing to do but chuckle and smile
And chirp to the reindeer once in a while,
And nothing to worry about at all
But a gift too large for a chimney too small.
They think that his life is one long Ho-ho!,
But they're wrong,
And I'll tell you how I know."
"It was one of those wintery-smelling nights,
And the sky was alive with northern lights,
Flickering lights,
Glimmering lights,
Quivery,
Shivery,
Shimmering lights,
Wavering,
Trembling,
Rippling,
Drifting,
A vast kaleidoscope softly shifting."
