A true first edition of A Baby Is Born: The Story of How Life Begins by Milton I. Levine, M.D., and Jean H. Seligmann. Illustrated by Eloise Wilkin.

Written by Milton I. Levine, M.D., and Jean H. Seligmann. Illustrated by Eloise Wilkin. First edition, 1949. Simon and Schuster.

WHEN YOU WERE A BABY

"Have you ever seen pictures of yourself when you were just a tiny baby? You looked very different from the way you do now, didn't you? You probably had little or no hair on your head, no teeth in your mouth. You could not walk or talk when you were little, either. All you could when you wanted something was cry, and to get from one place to another you had to be carried. But gradually you grew up, you learned to walk and talk and sing, to run and jump and play. ..."

Dr. Milton Levine (1901 - 1903) was a well-known and respected pediatrician in New York City, and the first to advocate uniting mother and baby as soon after birth as possible rather than keeping them separated. Dr. Levine and his wife Jean Seligmann, a nurse who specialized in psychiatry, worked together and wrote about child birth and childhood development.

A Baby Is Born was written to explain to children six through ten how babies are born, and how children grow up into young adults, get married, and have babies of their own.
