First edition thus of The Beloved Vagabond by William J. Locke, illustrated by Jean Dulac.

Written by William J. Locke. Illustrated by Jean Dulac. First published in 1922. John Lane, The Bodley Head Limited, Vigo Street, London, W.I.

William John Locke (1863 – 1930) was a best-selling author of novels and short stories in Britain and America and a successful playwright.

In The Beloved Vagabond, one of his most popular and enduring novels, a 19th century French architect disguises himself as a "lovable Bohemian" and calls himself Paragot. Goodreads: "Paragot adopts a young urchin from the London slums and gives him an adventurous education, travelling through Europe in a band of musicians. Paragot, however, has a dark romantic secret which threatens to change their lives."

Condition*: Very Good. Dust jacket missing. Blue-embossed tan cloth cover is slightly sunned, with light shelf wear. The frontispiece is loose. (See note on pages, below.)

A note about the book's pages (see full Condition statement, above). Most have cut fore-edges (the edges away from the spine) as you would expect in a modern book, but many are unopened, meaning that two pages are still joined along the fore-edge. As an example, page 269 remains unopened. It was common through the early 20th century for books to be printed with pages unopened, leaving the pleasure of being the first to open and read a book to the buyer, who cut the pages with a book knife. The terms "uncut pages" and "unopened pages" are often confused. A true uncut page has a "deckled edge", the ragged edge you've seen in stationary as well as books. An unopened page is folded. In this case, "unopened" is the correct term.
