First American edition of The Story of Noah by Clifford Webb, a beautifully illustrated modern story of Noah's great adventure.

Written and illustrated by Clifford Webb. First American edition, 1949. Frederick Warne & Co Inc, New York.

"Once upon a time, and it was a very long time ago when the world was new, there was a Valley far away to the East where two rivers met. There were high mountains standing up round this Valley closing it in like the sides of a box...

"Beyond the sands at the edge of the rivers were green fields and thatched cottages, and barns and pigsties and haystacks; and beyond that again was a thick forest that...gave a home to all those wild animals that had not yet made friends with men.

"The people who lived in this Valley were good to look at. Tall and strong, browned by the sunshine and sleek with good food. Unfortunately they were not nearly as nice as they looked, being very conceited, quarrelsome, and lazy as a result of getting all that they wanted without much effort. ...

"All except one Family, who lived the furthest away from the rivers. Their name was Mr. and Mrs. NOAH, and they had three sons named: Shem, Ham, and Japhet."

Clifford Webb (1895 - 1972) was one of England's great 20th century illustrators, primarily wildlife, and a leading wood engraver during the golden age of print making. Webb was overlooked for many years until recent scholarship uncovered previously unknown works and revived public interest in his work. Recommend The Life and Art of Clifford Webb by Simon Brett.

The Story of Noah was a modern telling of the great flood: the building of the Ark, the Noah family's saving of all the animals on the Earth, the rains stopping and the clouds parting to let in the sun, and life resuming.

Charming black and white line drawings illustrate the story. In the middle of the book, a full-color 20-page parade of beautifully rendered wildlife travels two by two, including barnyard chickens, pigs, and cows, and the world's most fantastic creatures, from elephants and ostriches to lions, tigers, and bears, and birds of all types.
