Randolph Caldecott's Picture Books, 2008 Huntington Library illustrated edition.

Illustrated by Randolph Caldecott. 2008 edition. Huntington Library Press.

This beautifully produced collection of nine of Randolph Caldecott's most popular picture books was published by the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. Caldecott illustrated well-known nursery rhymes and his own silly stories. We know of him today through the enduring appeal of his artwork, as well as the Caldecott Medal awarded annually to outstanding children's book illustrators by the American Library Association.

The book's introduction expands on Caldecott's history:

"Randolph Caldecott was one of the most popular illustrators of children's books in England during the last half of the nineteenth century. He may even have been the most popular among the beloved illustrators of the era, including his friends Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, and Beatrix Potter, whose books for children are still repreinted and read today. Potter's father is known to have purchased original Caldecott drawings as artistic inspirations for his daughter. Although Caldecott is best known in the United States for his children's picture books and because of the American Library Association medal named for him, his work also appeared in many English and American publications for adults."
