A charming bedtime story!
When Emma can't sleep, she counts sheep and usually drifts off to sleep by the count of ten. One sleepless night she was still awake when she reached 100! So, she kept counting, but when she counted to 107, the 108th sheep failed to appear. She looked around the headboard and found him on the floor. The sheep needed to jump over her headboard but he couldn't. And if the 108th sheep couldn't jump the headboard, the rest of the sheep wouldn't get any sleep either. Emma and the other sheep tried everything but nothing worked. Finally, Emma cut a hole in the headboard for the 108th sheep to jump through. Success! And Emma and all the sheep to infinity slept long and well.
Ayano Imai (1980- ) was born in England and raised and educated in Japan. The 108th Sheep is her first children's book, and her charming, memorable illustrations are a dreamscape of pencil drawings and watercolor on thick, cream-colored paper.
