Sorry, this item has sold.

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger, recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.

Written by L. Frank Baum. Illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger. First edition, first printing, 1996. A Michael Neugebauer Book, North-South Books.

I enjoyed a review of this edition of The Wizard of Oz, noting in particular Lisbeth Zwerger's beautiful watercolors, written by Caryn, also an illustrator, at Three Books A Night.

This edition of Wizard of Oz contains the full text of Frank Baum's book. Zwerger's illustrations set it apart as a work of even greater wonder. Her creative vision modernizes Alice, her cohorts, the Wizard, the Witch, and the world of Oz yet preserves the fantasy's charm and magic.

Lisbeth Zwerger (1954 - ), an Austrian artist, was awarded the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1990 for her lifetime contributions to children's literature, and at 36 she was only just beginning. Among her most celebrated works are Swan Lake, Alice in Wonderland, The Gift of the Magi, and the Tales of Beadle the Bard.

Zwerger works primarily in mixed media, using watercolor, colored pencils, pen & ink, and gouache. She's often referred to her favorite illustrators, including Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham, as inspirations for use of watercolor. Yet comparisons end there. Zwerger has a distinctive vision, as if she can still walk the streets of the fantasy worlds of children.

Condition*: Very Good/Very Good. The inside dust jacket and the book's interior pages are slightly sunned along the top of the text block, and the book is missing the green glasses intended for viewing the Emerald City. (They were tucked into the black pocket in the back of the book.)
