J.L. "Jim" Carr (1912 - 1994), when asked in a 1986 Vogue interview to come up with a dictionary definition of himself, provided a wonderful writing sample.

Not so, Mr. Carr. A Month In The Country, praised as "perfection" and looked to as an outstanding example of the novella, won the Guardian Fiction Prize and was short-listed for the Booker Prize. In all, Carr wrote eight novels, to his everlasting credit.
