A lovely 1973 republication of Grimm's Fairy Tales: Twenty Stories illustrated by Arthur Rackham.
Written by the Brothers Grimm. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. First edition thus, October, 1973. A Studio Book - The Viking Press, New York.
"It was the middle of winter, and the snowflakes were falling form the sky like feathers. Now, a Queen sat sewing at a window framed in black ebony, and as she sewed she looked out upon the snow. Suddenly she pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell on to the snow. And the red looked so lovely o the white that she thought to herself: "If only I had a child as white as snow and as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the window frame!" Soon after, she had a daughter, whose hair was black as ebony, while her cheeks were red as blood, and her skin as white as snow; so she was called Snowdrop."
So begins the original story by the Brothers Grimm which we know today as Snow White. In 1900, Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939) reacquainted English children and adults alike with these traditional folk tales through his beautiful illustrations for The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. He was already widely recognized for Rip Van Winkle, Peter Pan of Kensington Gardens, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, among other works, but the stunning full-color plates for The Fairy Tales book was a public sensation. Rackham accomplished his craft through pen & ink and watercolor, and advances in printing technology allowed for the publication of signed and numbered limited editions as well as less expensive books. When The Viking Press published Grimm's Fairy Tales: Twenty Stories in October, 1973, Rackham's earlier work had been out of print for decades.
