Opal Wheeler was a mid-20th C children's author best known for a series of biographies of the great musicians, including Hayden, Mozart, Bach, and many others.
Sing for Christmas includes music and lyrics of twenty-nine classic Christmas songs, such as Away in a Manger, Deck the Hall, and Angels We Have Heard on High, and short stories about twenty-four of the songs.
The best part of this music book are Gustaf Tenggren's (1896 - 1970) wonderful illustrations. Swedish-born Tenggren was already a well-regarded children's book illustrator in Sweden and the U.S. when in 1936 he was hired by the Walt Disney Company as chief illustrator of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The 1930s were the height of the Golden Age of Disney animated feature films and Tenggren would work on many other Disney projects, including Bambi and Pinocchio.
After leaving Disney, Tenggren adopted a different artistic style and worked for Little Golden Books for twenty years. His work for The Poky Little Puppy made it one of the most popular children's books of all time.
Condition*: Very Good. Missing dust jacket. The paper coverboards have edgewear along the bottom, a minor scuff on the front, and bumped corners. The previous owner discreetly marked her favorite songs in pencil in the index and circled a few of the page numbers. The night before Christmas, it appears a mouse was indeed stirring and nibbled the top edge of page 35.
