At the turn of the 20th century, Edith Nesbit (1858 - 1924) was a force in English children's literature, and an interesting person with a full and colorful life. As Gore Vidal wrote in the New York Review of Books in 1964, "After Lewis Carroll, E. Nesbit is the best of the English fabulists who wrote about children (neither wrote for children) and like Carroll she was able to create a world of magic and inverted logic that was entirely her own." In the course of the last one hundred years, her books have never been out of print.
