These sixteen Russian fairy tales are among more than 600 folk and fairy tales collected by Russian folklorist Alexander Afanasyev (1826 - 1871) and transcribed from oral traditions into Russian vernacular and published in the mid-1800s, a collection comparable to the works of the Brothers Grimm.
You'll recognize some of the archetypal characters, such as the evil stepmother, the controlling witch, the vulnerable but strong girl, the handsome rescuer. For example, Vasilisa The Beautiful is cousin to Cinderella. But you'll also be treated to original stories Russian families have recounted to their children for centuries.
The stories are generously illustrated by Vladimir Minayev, who conveys the stories' emotional depths, the characters' personalities, and the Russian culture and sense of place.
