"Grama Bowman put her hand on the trunk of one of the trees. "You see this mark here?" she said, pointing to the shape on the bark that looked almost like a bird. "We Abenaki say this is the mark of Badogi, the Thunder. The lightning is this arrow and he shoots it during the storms. But he doesn't want to hurt our people and so he marked these trees. Lightning never strikes these birch trees, so if you have to be near any tree in a storm, better to be near a young birch tree."
Jamie's heart and mind are filled with memories of her beloved great-grandmother, who came to live with her family six years ago and has passed away. Jamie remembers other lessons her Grama Bowman taught her, and honors her with a song she learned to greet each new day and every new person she meets. "When you sing it, you will not be alone."
Joseph Bruchac (1942 - ) is an educator, storyteller, and author of many books, and is of Abenaki and European heritage, like Jamie and her great-grandmother. In 1999 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas.
Paul Morin lives and works in Canada and has illustrated many other children's books. His work for Fox Song is very moving. Look closely at the picture of the trees' reflections in the river and of Jamie and Grama Bowman walking to the stand of birch trees.
