First edition of Crow and Weasel by Barry Lopez and Tom Pohrt. The Parents' Choice Award-winning story of two young men who set out on a journey of exploration.
Written by Barry Lopez. Illustrated by Tom Pohrt. 1990 first edition. North Point Press.
"The horses shiverd off the night. Pintos and buckskins, sorrels and blue roans. They stood watering in the creek or continued to graze, their breath rising in steam. A few watched two young men walking out toward them from the village. As the men drew near, the horses that were dozing began to stir.
The men walked softly among them, reasuring them with quiet words, slowly separating two horses out. They eased buffalo-hair bridles over their necks and started them back to the village. The one named Weasel led, trailing a pale mare with dark brown ears. The one called Crow followed behind with deliberate calmness, walking a bald-faced pinto colt. Crow's eyes were fixed on the dark, silent doorways of the tipis ahead. Weasel stopped once, to finger blades of grass that had been cropped by an animal other than a horse in the night. ..."
Crow and Weasel embark on a journey beyond the boundaries of their people's known world. Their fathers believe they're too young and untested and oppose the journey as too dangerous, but Mountain Lion is convinced by a dream that the they're up to the challenge and will return with important knowledge.
The two young men encounter Mouse, who gives them a flint for making fire, and the Inuit people of the north, who give them food and fine gifts, and Grizzly Bear, who saves them from starvation, and Badger, who gives them shelter, helps them hone their storytelling, and sets them on the safest way home.
Along the way, they learn through experience the importance and value of friendship, appreciation for nature, respect for other peoples, and expanding their horizons.
