I'm so pleased to offer another of Faith Ringgold's wonderful children's books. Born in 1930 and raised in Harlem, she is an accomplished painter, sculptor, and quilter, an educator, and the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for her artistic works and community activism. In 1992, her book Tar Beach was a Caldecott Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration.
Dinner at Aunt Connie's House was inspired by one of Faith's quilts, The Dinner Quilt. From the jacket:

This summer, Aunt Connie, an artist, has several surprises for the family. One is that she and uncle Bates have adopted a son, Lonnie, whose green eyes and red hair instantly captivate Melody."
Melody and Lonnie, drawn to voices coming from the attic, discover the other surprise; twelve paintings by Aunt Connie of famous Africa-American women. And they speak! The children are mesmerized as the women tell the stories of their lives.
