Sorry, this item has sold.

First edition of Dinner at Aunt Connie's House by Faith Ringgold. Two children meet for the first time at Aunt Connie's beach house and become fast friends on the way to discovering an amazing history lesson in the attic.

Written and illustrated by Faith Ringgold. 1993, stated first edition, first printing. Hyperion Books for Children.

I'm so pleased to offer another of Faith Ringgold's wonderful children's books. Born in 1930 and raised in Harlem, she is an accomplished painter, sculptor, and quilter, an educator, and the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for her artistic works and community activism. In 1992, her book Tar Beach was a Caldecott Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration.

Dinner at Aunt Connie's House was inspired by one of Faith's quilts, The Dinner Quilt. From the jacket:

"For Melody the best thing about summertime was going to family dinners at Aunt Connie and Uncle Bates's big beautiful house on the beach. This summer, Aunt Connie, an artist, has several surprises for the family. One is that she and uncle Bates have adopted a son, Lonnie, whose green eyes and red hair instantly captivate Melody."

Melody and Lonnie, drawn to voices coming from the attic, discover the other surprise; twelve paintings by Aunt Connie of famous Africa-American women. And they speak! The children are mesmerized as the women tell the stories of their lives.
