Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953) was one of the most popular illustrators of the early 20th C, and is one of the best remembered and most appreciated of the many artists who've illustrated Andersen's stories. The Snow Queen and Other Stories was first published as an illustrated gift book in 1911 by Hodder & Stoughton. Taking advantage of Dulac's talent and newer full-color printing techniques, they also commissioned Dulac's illustrations for William Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Rubauyat of Omar Khayyam, The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales, The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, and Edmund Dulac's Picture-Book for the French Red Cross.
His work for The Snow Queen is of a quality and beauty that has endured for over a hundred years. This edition published in 1976 was the only complete, unabridged reprint of the original.
In addition to The Snow Queen, this edition includes The Emperor's New Clothes, The Wind's Tale, The Nightingale, and The Little Mermaid.
The book is signed by the original owner, who was active in Tucson's theater arts community and a founder of the Arizona Theater Company.
Condition*: Near Fine/Good. The original owner signed the front endpaper. The dust jacket was folded along the front bottom edge and has an open tear in the lower left corner, small closed tears in the lower right corner and on the back, chips at the head and tail of the spine, and a tear on the front flap taped closed.
