First edition of The Tide Won't Wait by Laura Bannon. A Nova Scotia fisherman's son Worrell and his cousin Anne forge an unexpected friendship through adventure in the North Atlantic.

Written and illustrated by Laura Bannon. 1957 first edition. Albert Whitman & Company, Chicago. (Out of print.)

Laura Bannon (1895 - 1963) studied and taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, where her work was praised for "instilling creative independence and cultural appreciation in the minds of her readers".

CHAPTER 1: THE TIDE

"The tide was out when Worrell went to bed. The bare wet floor of the Nova Scotia bay gleamed in the moonlight.

While Worrell slept the great tide of Fundy surged back into the bay, bringing the shad fish. Salt water, thirty feet deep, filled the basin from dike to dike.

By the time Worrell woke in the morning the tide was racing out again, giving the shad a free ride back to the Bay of Fundy - except those that hung high and dry in Dad's nets."

Worrell is getting old enough to help his father and older brother Ted in the family's fishing business, so he's put out when his mother tells him that he has to entertain his visiting cousin Annabelle. He remembers her from her last visit as a prissy, frilly little girl. Rats! Even his hounddog Hippo looks disappointed. When she and her small dog Rowdy arrive, instead of a frilly dress she's wearing pants, and she's interested in Worrell and everything there is to know about fishing. And she prefers "Anne" to Annabelle. Worrell starts to think she may be okay. But, stubborn as ever, Anne is determined to keep up with the boys and learns about the North Atlantic in the process.
