Ramona The Brave by Beverly Cleary and Alan Tiegreen. Ramona's father encourages her to be "Be brave!" in facing her fears and the challenges of growing up.

Written by Beverly Cleary. Illustrated by Alan Tiegreen. 1975, book club edition. William Morrow and Company, New York.

Ramona and her sister Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby are friends and neighbors of Henry Huggins, the main character of Cleary's first children's book series in the 1950s. They live with their families on Klickitat St. in Portland, OR, and Ramona is an imaginitive, rambunctious little girl. Too little for Henry and Beezus to bother with until she's old enough to go to school, and get her own book.

In Ramona the Brave, the second book in the Ramona series, she enters the first grade and very quickly confronts her most daunting nemesis...conformity. First grade teacher Mrs. Griggs doesn't understand or appreciate Ramona's individuality, and they are soon at odds. Then there's Susan, her #1 competitor, who steals her best ideas to become teacher's pet. But Ramona's father likes her "spunk", which gives her the courage she needs to be herself and face her fears. And still mind her teachers.

"For the first time Ramona looked into her very own mirror in her very own room. She saw a stranger, a girl with red eyes and a puffy, tearstained face, who did not look at all the way Ramona pictures herself. Ramona thought of herself as the kind of girl everyone should like, but this girl..."
