I'm a Stranger Here Myself by Ogden Nash - First Edition - Vintage Books, Poets, Poetry, Poetry Book, Poems for Teachers, Rhymes, 1930s

Sorry, this item has sold.

First 1938 edition of I'm a Stranger Here Myself by Ogden Nash, "poet, storyteller in verse and commentator on the human heart."

Written by Ogden Nash. Stated first edition, published June 1938. (Some poems were previously published in magazines.) Little, Brown & Company.

Poet Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971) was a singular crafter of word pictures whose easy-going way of taking himself lightly allowed him to take people, conventions, and life in general less seriously. Yet he was taken quite seriously by fellow poets and millions of readers as a genius with language who could both entertain and provoke with clever, whimsical rhyming and wordplay and insightful observation.

From the jacket:

"His philosophy cracks down on the middle of the month and Mondays, on ants and centipedes, hair-cuts, Mother's Day, allergy, inter-office memoranda, Columbus and the common cold. His outrageous rhymes and embarrassing meters are not yet taught in the schools of America. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Ogden Nash, poet, storyteller in verse and commentator on the human heart."

I'm a Stranger Here Myself includes previously unpublished poems and works that originally appeared in magazines such as Harper's, The New Yorker, and Saturday evening Post.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS

"Behold the hippopotamus!
We laugh at how he looks at us,
And yet in moments dank and grim,
I wonder how we look to him.
Peace, peace, thou hippopotamus!
we really look all right to us,
As you no doubt delight the eye
of other hippopotami."
