First edition of Alfred Hitchcock's Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries. Five mysteries compiled for young readers to solve themselves.
Written by Alfred Hitchock. Illustrated by Fred Banbery. 1963, first edition. Random House, Inc., publishers.
"Good evening and welcome to Alfred Hitchcock's Bureau of Investigation."
If you're a fan of Alfred Hitchcock or simply enjoy mysteries, or both, this book can be an entertaining walk down memory lane, circa 1960s, or an introduction to Hitchcock for a favorite young reader. Hitchcock wrote the stories for young readers of the early 60s, so they're tame by today's standards yet still absorbing and challenging.
As the title suggests, readers solve the mysteries themselves. Hitchcock introduces each chapter, for example, Chapter I begins:
"I trust you like circuses. When I was a boy - yes, though you may find it difficult to believe, I was once a boy - every right-thinking lad aspired either to join a circus, or to become a detective like Sherlock Holmes. I couldn't make up my mind which I wanted most, with the result - well, you know how I wound up. No need to go into that. But now you may do both - join a circus and play detective - without ever leaving the comfort of your own easy chair. Just keep your eyes and ears alert for clues as we join Jerry Mason in - " The Mystery of the Five Sinister Thefts".

Artist Fred Banbery (1913 - 1999) captures the suspense and mystery of the stories, and the graphic sense of the 1960s, in delightful contrast with the artwork he's best known for - the six Paddington Bear books he illustrated for Michael Bond.
