First American edition of Land of Dreams by Michael Foreman. An old man and a boy, high above the world, find and build the stuff dreams are made of.
Written and illustrated by Michael Foreman. 1982, first American edition. Holt, Rinehart and Winston.
It is always a pleasure when the first few sentences of a book immediately set the road before you so that you automatically, without thinking, start walking.
"High in the mountains above the jungles, deserts and cities of the world lived an old man and a boy. They lived in a valley of golden summers and silver streams. In winter everything was covered in a deep blanket of snow. In the higher slopes around the valley it was always winter. Sometimes great winds blew through the mountain, bringing snatches of song and slight traces of sound from the people far below."
The old man and the boy scavange for artifacts from the world's dreams and re-assemble them into new dreams. In one of the pages we see a field of clouds strewn about with Humpty Dumpty, the White Rabbit, a paddle steamer, an Egyptian statue, a whale, a unicorn, an Indian on his horse, a walrus, a train engine, a deep sea diver, a toy solder, cupid, and other discarded bits of dreams.
One day they salvage a giant! He's very sad because no one remembers giants to dream about them. The old man and the boy enlist him to build bigger, better dreams, until they find the long, lost giant of dreams and their friend returns with him to the world of dreams.
