"Long ago in an enchanted forest there lived a large giant named John.
The fairies, who also lived in the forest, played magic dancing music for John.
He had to dance and dane and could not stop until the music stopped.
The dancing made John's big feet hurt, but he thought it was great fun.
Sweet, kind Giant John and his mother are very poor, "only two potato chips in the cupboard", so John sets out to find a job. He goes to work for a King and Queen who think he's wonderful and pay him in gold. One day, his friends the fairies come to visit, but when they begin to play their music he starts dancing, and can't stop. He dances on the flowers and trees and dances on the castle. But all's well that end's well, and John and his mother live happily ever after.
Arnold Lobel's (1933 - 1987) wonderful illustrations tell the story on their own. He was one of the most influential children's book authors and winner of the Caldecott and Newbery awards.
Lobel is also known for his collaborations with his wife Anita Lobel, a writer and illustrator: How The Rooster Saved The Day, A Treeful of Pigs, On Market Street (Caldecott Honor Book, 1981), and The Rose In My Garden.
Condition*: Very Good. Without dust jacket, as issued. Lower corners of the cover boards are mildly bumped due to normal shelf wear.
