In a dream, a young black girl imagines Martin Luther King, Jr. as a boy, unaware of being any different from any other boy, until his best friend, a white boy, is prevented by his mother from ever playing with him again. Martin asks why and is shocked when she says that it's because they're white and he's black. The dream imagine's his life and death, the experience of racism, and the ongoing pursuit of racial and social justice.
A dreamscape may be an imperfect device in explaining the complex concepts and events of King's life but it breaks them into manageable bites for discussion and questions.
Faith Ringgold (1930 - ), born and raised in Harlem, is an accomplished painter, sculptor, and quilter, an educator, and the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for her artistic works and community activism. In 1992, her back Tar Beach was a Caldecott Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration.
